2-Man Scramble Results

The 2-Man Scramble presented by TheCornerGuardStore.com took place last Saturday at Brookview National. The first flight was hotly contested with 3 teams shooting -10 or better. The previous tournament record was -10 and our two top teams bettered that number with very solid rounds of -11, 61. This was the first year that we tried the Red-White-Blue format and I think it was pretty well received by the competitors. Most agreed that playing the first 6 holes from the Red tees was not as easy as they thought it would be.

We ended up with 24 teams, 3 flights of 8 for the event. The weather was fantastic. It heated up by the end of the round, but there was very little wind out there. Rob Bialon was a sharp-shooter on the par 3's, capturing both nearies on the front 9.

Make sure to check out the current BMGA Cup Points standings on the Weekend Events tab of the website. We have a very close race at this point with two majors still on the schedule. The next event is the President's Cup sponsored by Randy's Sanitation on August 7th. Sign up now!

Here are your winners. Salute!

Rotation Results

Erik Swanson and Scott Johnson played some wonderful golf on Saturday to capture the 1st Flight championship of the 2010 Rotation by 4 strokes. The duo combined to shoot a 4-under par 67 on a soggy Brookview golf course that actually played better than projected after storms ravaged the course on Friday night. Swanson and Johnson combined to make 7 birdies, including two in the difficult Alternate Shot portion of the tourhament. Paired with eventual T-2nd place finishers Kelly Gallagher and Nick Schultz, the eventual champions had a one stroke lead over their pairing partners through 15 holes when Scott chipped in for birdie on 16 and Schultz/Gallagher struggled for a crumpling double bogey.

Competition was fierce in all four flights as teams battled through the alternate shot portion to hold on to the good scores posted in the scramble and best ball stages. Here are the final results.

Final payouts will be $40 (per player) for 1st place and $25 for 2nd place in the flight. BMGA Cup Points will be posted in the tournament results section.

WEEK 8

As we have reached the half way mark there are a few housekeeping items in regards to scoring during the second half and scorecards.  Per the league guide all players must have a handicap (Or at least a handicap trend) in GHIN.  If you do not  we are no longer using the callaway system and you will play your round as a zero.  When it comes to score cards please include your LAST NAME,  several teams have players with the same first name and I dont know who you are by your writing.  In the second half if you do not add your last name to the scorecard you will play as a forefit for your team.

In more exciting news we ended the first half the season on a high note.  We set new records for low net and low gross of the year.  Stan Hop shot 37 net 28, while Nick Schultz shot 32!!!  Great rounds guys.  As a league we had more rounds at par or better (for the gross scores) and around 30 (for the net scores) than we have had all year.  It appears we like the softer conditions at Brookview.

There are a few scorecard issues I need to resolve but I dont believe they will effect the overall scoring for the half.

Congrats to Team 8 "The Scrappers"  lead by Al Rosby coming back from 4 points down entering last night to win by 3 points over Team 7 "Ciento Uno" who claimed second.  Third goes to Team 11 "Ciento Dos"

Team 8  "The Scrappers" get $40.00 each

E-Commworks 2-Man Match Play Underway

E-Commworks 2-Man Match Play Underway Image

The 2-Man Match Play got off to a rocky start last Saturday at Brookview. The forecast for the day was a high of 85 degrees and 10% chance of rain...well, by 10:00 it was around 55 degrees and the chance of rain appeared to be more like 99%. The skies opened up and the course was met with about 2 hours worth of rain, thunder and lightning. Many groups couldn't wait it out and rescheduled the remainder of their first round matches. Some of us stuck it out and finished. Overall, it was still a fun day, but we could have definitely done without the delay.

Remember to post your names on the bracket on the BMGA wall after the match so your next opponents know who to contact to set up the next match.

See you next Saturday for the Timber Lodge Steakhouse Individual Match Play!

Game-Time Temp

After a threat of accumulating snow Friday night, the Sil-Pro Greek Scramble was played as scheduled. The thermometer read 35 degrees early Saturday morning, but the men of the BMGA were excited to start the weekend tournament season no matter the conditions. Temperatures climbed into the mid-40's later in the morning, but the wind picked up to toughen up the course for the event.

I have to say hat's off to the guys. With the brisk conditions, we only had 59 out of the scheduled 60 players tee it up and compete. That is an incredible number and I'm sure Brookview was happy to have us out there on Saturday. The winning team battled the wind and cold to come in at -1, 143, the only team to play all 18 holes under par.

Thanks to all for a great event and make sure to sign up for the 2-Man Match Play. Deadline is THIS week.

Par 3 Three Club/ Social Night

Last night was a successful night to kickoff the 2010 season. Great weather along with Ben Disch and Kim Straw cooking brats and burgers.  Thanks to all who attended.

Starting where he left off as 2009 BMGA Player of the Year Brad Kadue shot a 17 to tie with Dan O'Brien for the low score of the night.  In his on bid to knock Kadue/O'Brien from the top spot, Tom Nestvold won the nearie on #9 sticking it to ~7ft.  WIth an added bonus for this years Par 3 Three Club, Jim Turbenson and Dan Quarberg tied for 34th spot to also take home $7.50 each.  (Payout was based on the low score, doubled and paying out that position in the field)  Your chits should be in the proshop shortly.

Brad Kadue & Dan O'Brien $7.50 each
Jim Turbenson and Dan Quarberg $7.50 each

Spring Meeting

Gentlemen of the BMGA,
Our Spring meeting is just around the corner. The spring meeting is a great time to catch up with some people you haven't seen all winter, have a free beer or two, hear about changes made for the upcoming season, and most importantly register for the 2010 season.
The meeting this year is scheduled for March 10th at the Brookview Community Center. Registration and social time begin at 6 and a short overview of the upcoming season from myself, Ben Disch (Brookview's Golf Operation's Manager), Howie Hoffman (2010WNL Coordinator), and the captain of the 2 time defending 16 (now 24) man team, Nick Schultz will start around 6:30.
At the conclusion of us speaking, we will have a drawing for all paid members for 2010. The drawing will feature a few rounds at Brookview, some lessons from our great teaching pros, and the annual Wednesday Night league fee for one member.
Also new this year, we are having a Brookview Winter Classic. Matt Just, one of our teaching pros, runs and teaches lessons at the Lifetime Fitness facility in SLP. A few of us went over and tried out his simulators and we had a blast. He has invited us to host our first winter event at Lifetime. They have 6 simulators, and a ton of courses to choose from. Each simulator works best with 4 golfers, so this event will be limited to the first 24 to sign up. To encourage attendance at the spring meeting, that is where registration for the classic will be. Brian Sutton, brian.m.sutton@gmail.com will be your contact if you cannot attend the spring meeting and want to be put on the waiting list. If we get 24 to sign up at the meeting, the waiting list be used if there are last minute cancellations. Matt has given us a very generous discount and the cost will be $20 for 18 holes. The event will be on March 13th and start at 8 am and will probably take around 4 hours.
Please let me know if you have any other questions. Otherwise, I look forward to seeing you all on the 10th!
Philip Iskierka

Sponsors

Dear BMGA Members,
Well, it is about that time of year where many of us are getting the golf itch. Some have been fortunate to travel a little, there may even be a few snowbirds in the league, but from most of you that I have spoken with, golf was an afterthought this winter and you are ready for the season to begin.
The registration form is just about complete, and it will be posted on bmga.org as well as printed and put at the clubhouse. One of the nicest things we were able to do this year, was keep our prices the same and add some additional benefits to the league for our members.
If our biggest change is a success, we will be able to have increased beer nights, prizes, and possibly an additional food night. As many of you know, I sell real estate. Through simply getting to know people, and what they do, this league has become a great referral source for me. I know I am not the only one fortunate enough to connect  with other members and work together outside the BMGA. While at a recent board meeting, tournament sponsorship came up. When discussing potential sponsors, Many comments were made by the board that if they only would have known, so and so was a remodeler, or financial advisor, or painter, or in IT,  or a banker, or you get the drift, they for sure would have given them an attempt to get their business. This prompted the idea to have named sponsors for each BMGA weekend event this year. It is an exciting new development that I think will add a lot to the BMGA. Each sponsor will be featured on the website during their tournament, featured as the naming sponsor on the signup sheet for that tournament, be allowed to name the tournament (within reason keeping the old name as part of the name), automatically become a guest day sponsor as well, get or post a sign for the tournament and guest day, and just have some fun with it.
As of now, we have 8 weekend tournaments. 3 naming rights have already been sold, and a couple other members are close to committing. The Sil-Pro Greek Scramble, The Club Championship sponsored by Brookview, and the Philipiskierka@edinarealty.com Calcutta, are our first 3 commitments. The sponsorship for each naming right is $250 (most already were spending $100 on Guest Day).
The other sponsorship offered was the naming rights for the cup. Last year was our first year with the cup and everybody had a lot of fun with it. This year we will all be battling for the Village Hair Cup. Chuck Kugler, who many of you know, owns Village Hair and jumped at the opportunity to purchase the naming rights. The cup sponsorship came in at a price tag of $500.
The added revenue will only make our club better and keep our  fees as low as possible. Some increased networking will  occur, and the 2010 BMGA season will be the best to date.
A sponsorship form will be created, but I am always here if you have questions about or interest in becoming a 2010 sponsor.

BMGA 2009 Player of the Year - Brad Kadue!

BMGA 2009 Player of the Year - Brad Kadue! Image
Kadue eager for more hardware in 2010.

Brad Kadue is the 2009 BMGA Player of the Year. Brad competed in every weekend event this season, and finished the year with dramatic victories in the final two majors, Club Championship (1st Flight) and the 3-Ball on his way to capturing the innagural BMGA Cup Points Title. Brad and his partner Roger Hamm lost in the finals of the 2-Man Match Play and he captained his WNL team into the finals before losing to Bogies and Stogies.

Congratulations on a great season, Brad!

16-Man Team Champions Again

On Sunday, your Class-B 16-Man Team played the championship match vs Highland at Gross National Golf Course. The day was cold and overcast, but the course was in pretty good condition. The Brookview squad was missing some of its better players from a handicap ranking perspective, but played well as a team and were able to come out on top of the highly contested battle.

Highland was the lone team to beat the Class-B Brooky's this year at Highland in July when many of the Brooky's were at their cabins/weddings/kids events. This time around, the neutral site leveled the playing field and we had a very close match. After 4 groups had come off the 18th green, Highland had a 7 to 5 lead thanks to a miraculous birdie putt that swung the Schultz/Alexander match from a push to a 2.5 to .5 defeat. The very next group of Johnson/Hills suffered an identical fate and suddenly Highland had control of the match, up 9.5 to 5.5 with only 3 groups out on the course. Thankfully, Captain Schultz structured the pairings so that these three groups contained some of the finest players ever to suit up for Brookview. Nestvold/Gallagher came in with a strong sweep to move the squad to within one point as Tom hammered home a birdie putt on the last hole to secure the 3 points. Next up was Cavanagh/White who busted the match wide open on the front nine winning 5UP, but nearly lost the overall lead as their opponents came to life, but held on for the 2-1 victory to square the championship. That meant it was all up to the final group of the day. Hoffman/Kraus were rumored to be in a very tight match but we could see that Howie and Mark had the tee box on 18. The final hole was halved and the match ended with Brookview 1UP, 2.5 to .5 after halving the front 9 to give Brookview the victory at 13 to 11.

Thank you very much to all of you that stepped in and played for the 16-Man Team this year! It is difficult to make it to all of the matches with everyone's schedules and you guys did a fantastic job. After winning the Class-C title last year, we are now the Class-B champs and I am excited to see what next year will bring.

Have a great off-season and we'll see you in the Spring!

-Nick

16-Man Team Marches On

Sunday, at the U of M Les Bolstad course, the Brookview Class B 16-Man team was victorious over Meadowbrook to advance to the finals. Brookview was missing a handful of their to players, but the boys beared down and put together some fantastic rounds on the U course. Howie Hoffman carded the round of the day with a 2 under 69. Other quality rounds were put up by Scott Johnson (71), Jim Sanford (72) and Doug Campbell (72). The Meadowbrook squad was at full strength and just ran into a Brookvew buzz saw out there. The weather was great, the greens were punched earlier that week, but the greens were actually rolling pretty decent.

Next up will be Highland National on October 4th at Gross Golf Course.

Great playing guys!

Thank you again for a great year

Gentleman of the BMGA,

I would again like to whole heartedly thank you for a great year with the Brookview Men's Golf Association!  The board along with myself have had a great time facilitating what can only be described as a delightful year of golf.  We've seen WNL full of enthusiastic players during a difficult time economically, weekend tournaments filled to the brink, and a great race to the first ever BMGA Cup!!  I can honestly say that I have never had a better time in the BMGA and it is all thanks to support of all of you, the members.  Without you this league would not be possible.  I Thank you for making this league the best in the Twin Cities.

With that said, it is with great sadness that I have to inform you that I will not be returning to the BMGA next year.  I have been offered and accepted a job to work as a financial analyst at Dish Network in Colorado.  It was always my goal upon graduation to find a job in the Twin Cities metro area and continue playing the great game of golf at Brookview, but as many of you know finding a job right now is incredibly difficult.  I therefore had to take the offer and uproot myself and my fiancé to Denver.  I hope to one day return to Minneapolis and rejoin the BMGA, but until then you all have a standing invitation to travel to Denver and meet me for a round of golf.  I guarantee that I will have all the courses scouted and we will play only the best!

I leave the league in the hands of a very capable board and next year's President Phil Iskierka.  They will do a great job and I hope you will give them as much enthusiasm as you have me.

Finally, I will be around for the Calcutta auction and Banquet so be sure to sign up for both (unfortunately I can't play in the Calcutta though).  I will undoubtedly be drinking heavily in celebration and hope you can join me.  A this time, I do have to put my president's hat and ask that everyone who is going, please register for the banquet on the website.  We get a head count based on who registers so be sure to sign up your spouse as well (in the notes portion of the registration).

Thanks again for everything,  it has been a pleasure serving as your president.  I look forward to seeing you all at the banquet.

Bogies and Stogies - 2009 WNL Champions!

Congratulations to Bogies and Stogies, your 2009 WNL Champions!

On a perfect night for golf, Bogies and Stogies took down team Putt for Dough in the final round of the 2009 Wednesday Night League Playoffs by a margin of 56.5 to 47.5.

Both teams were led by rookie captains, and both teams included a fair number of rookie players.

Thanks to everyone for your participation in the league this season.  Overall, I feel like things went well.  While we didn't always have the best weather, we managed to get ALL 16 weeks + the 2 playoff weeks in, which is a big plus.  I hope to see many of you at the banquet where we can reflect on another memorable WNL season.

And don't forget - get registered for the final BMGA golf event of the year, the 2009 Calcutta.  Register online, or fill out a form for the drop box - but get registered early.  The club championship filled up completely, I don't want to have to leave anybody out of the Calcutta!

BMGA Club Championship Results

Thank you to all of you who competed in the club championship over the weekend. We had excellent weather both days and the course was in great shape considering all of the rain the previous week. Thanks to the Brookview staff for a great job on the course and helping facilitate the event. The course played difficult even in the relatively benign weather conditions because of the morning dew and the thick rough...exactly how the course should play for a championship event.

I've said it before, but the members are who makes these tournaments great. We had an excellent turnout for this event and from what I could tell, everyone enjoyed themelves on the course as well as on the patio after the rounds.

Congratulations to all of our 2009 BMGA Club Champions! Below are recaps of each flight. See the 'Weekend Events' tab for more scoring information.

Make sure to sign up for our next event, the 3-Ball Calcutta Tournament on Sept. 26-27.

Championship Flight:

The BMGA Club Championship was decided over the weekend and Jay Cavanagh out-dueled Howard Hoffman to win the Championship flight. Congratulations to both Jay and Howie on a fantastic tournament! Jay took a one-stroke lead to the 18th hole and found trouble in the right rough that prevented him from getting to the green in regulation. Howie knew he had to make something happen and took his drive right over the water and potential out of bouds on the left and blistered a drive to the left side of the fairway, no more than 120 yards out. After Jay pitched to 7 feet, Howie's birdie putt slid by the hole on the high side. Jay then rolled in the delicate par putt to close out his round of 69 and finish the tournament at a record-setting -2 total of 142. Howie finished one stroke back at 143. This is the first time in BMGA history that we have had anyone complete the weekend under par and we had two players accomplish that feat.

First Flight:

Brad Kadue birdied the final hole in dramatic fashion to tie Chris Wrecza at 158 and force a playoff. Kadue was able to keep the momentum going and won on the first hole of the sudden death playoff. Kadue picked up a stroke on Wrecza on the 17th hole as well and just rode the momentum all the way to the Winner's Circle.

Second Flight:

Martin Peyer ran away with the second flight, putting up career low rounds of 81-82 to win by a comfortable 8-stroke margin over Gary Jungbauer and Doug Paquette. Paquette had the best round in the flight on Saturday, but ran into trouble on the front nine on Sunday and watched Peyer pull away from the field.

Third Flight:

Stan Hop and Rick Kadue battled it out in the third flight in our second playoff of the weekend. Kadue, coming off a magical weekend in the Sr. Club Championship just couldn't outlast Hop and was defeated on the 3rd playoff hole. Stan looks to be in the driver's seat for the BMGA Cup as he has done very will in many events throughout the year.

SANFORD, SCHEUNEMANN WIN SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

The BMGA's elders conducted their championships last weekend, with Jim Sanford, Senior Club Champion, and Don Scheunemann, Super Senior Club Champion, bringing home the proverbial bacon.  Sanford shot 79/77 gross to just squeak past Larry Hahka, who matched that 77 Sunday but had started one behind.  Steve Slivken took third place.

In Super Seniors 84-year-old Don Scheunemann shot a net 73 Saturday and dusted his younger rivals Doug Diedrich and Jerry Thrall, who tied for second place.  Don's gross 48 on the front side Saturday morning included 11 putts!  Scheunemann went on Sunday to shoot a gross 96 -- with a 46 on the more difficult back side -- and take third place in the first flight of the regular seniors.  Eighty-four years old.

The First Flight champion in Seniors was Rick Kadue, who shot a mind-bending 61/66 = 127 net, which nipped runner-up Randy Zejdlik by eight. The Second Flight was won by Cory Lomen at 147, on a match of cards with Al Rosby who finished with the same number.  Richard Courtney took third.

The golf course was in great shape, the potentially iffy weather cooperated, and the Brookview staff -- admin, range, shop, rangers, grill and grounds -- all were very nice to us and we thank them.

Following are the scores and winners:

Senior Club Champion:   Jim Sanford                79/77 = 156
Second Place:                    Larry Hahka                80/77 = 157
Third Place:                         Steve Slivken              82/84 = 166

League Semi-finals results

The first week of the league playoffs was an unusual evening to say the least.  With severe weather pounding the entire state since the early morning, things didn't look too good in terms of getting a round in.  However, after careful study of the radar, and much Board consultation, the decision was made to play ball.  Whether it was luck, or skilled forecasting can be debated.  What can't be, however, is that it turned out to be a nice evening for golf.  Wet course, sure.  But no rain, no wind, comfortable temps, soft greens, fast play, and sunshine more than offset the wet conditions.

In the end, neither match was very close.  Maybe it was the weather, maybe it was just a bad night.  Whatever the case, teams 14 and 6 advanced easily over teams 9 and 7.  The scores of the matches were 68.5/35.5 and 64/40 respectively.  This sets up a showdown between teams 14 and 6 in the finals next week.  With both teams coming off big wins, it could be a great match.

Here's hoping for an easier go no-go decision next week!

League Play tonight 8/19/2009

I'm sure many of you are wondering what is going on with League tonight due to the rainy conditions.  After many back and forth discussions between the league coordinator, Brookview and members of the board, we have decided that the playoff matches must take place no matter the weather situation, unless lightning is seen of course.  As far as the other open slots, you are more than welcome to come and play your round if you like, but we understand if you see it fit to stay home.  Just remember that there are still closest to the pins and weekly games out there to be won, and if you don't show up you won't have any chance of winning chits.  So get your raingear on and I'll see you on the course!!

16-Man Class B Team Advances to Playoffs

The Class B 16-Man team pulled off a big W over a strong Meadowbrook team at Brookview on Sunday. Brookview won the match 15.5 to 8.5 and will likely be the top seed heading into the playoffs. The round of the day was posted by Erik Swanson, Swanny fired a 2 under par 70 as he and partner Scott Johnson took all 3 points in their match. The first playoff match will be on September 13th at a neutral site versus the 4th seed which was not yet posted by the MPGA at the time of this article.

The Class CC team won their match, also at Brookview, over a Princeton team that had many no-shows. Unfortunately, it looks like the Class CC team will miss out on the playoffs this season.

Tough Matches for 16-Man Teams

This past Sunday marked the first time the Brookview Class B team lost a match since 2007. It was a great run, but the team just couldn't overcome the tough match-up at Highland combined with the unuasually high number of conflicts among team members. Highland took 14 of the 24 points, but the Class B team still reamains in good playoff position with a home match vs 1st place Meadowbrook on August 2nd.

The Class CC team was a downstream victim of the lack of player availability and had a very difficult time out at Timber Creek, only mustering 5.5 points on the day. The Class CC boys will also be at home next month vs Princeton.

Let's try to get our best team out there next month and bring home a couple W's on our home course!

Guest Day

I would like to thank the membership of the BMGA for making Guest Day a success this year.  Without your willingness to participate and recruite your friends and relatives, events like this could not take place.  I personally had a blast and hope that all of you and your guest did as well.  Thank you again for making this great event possible.

Guest Day Tee Times

Guest Day starting tees have now been posted.  Please check your team and make sure that everything is correct.  If something needs to change, let me know.

Rotation Results

The weather was a bit questionable with off and on showers especially for the early groups, but it cleared up later in the morning and we were able to get all of the holes in. There were many great shots, some not so great shots and as always a lot of good times had by all on Saturday.

The Rotation Results are in and we have a new champion in the 1st flight. Somehow, the dream team of Gallagher/Schultz was upset by up and comers Bot/Lueder in the 1st flight. Congrats to our new champions. Word is that KG and Schultz will be practicing alternate shot over the next 12 months to prepare for next year's tournament.

Make sure to sign up early for the next weekend tournament, the Two-Man Scramble on July 25th!

Guest day is just around the corner and fast approaching.  The tournament this year is being held on July 8th with the festivities beginning at Noon.  I'd like to take this opportunity to remind you to sign up your team either on bmga.org or the sign up sheet at the end of this message.  Just fill it out, drop it off in the BMGA box or mail it to the address provided.  There are also extra fliers at Brookview for those that don't like to print things off, I know I don't!  Also please provide your guest's name on the form or in the comments box on BMGA.org and I will personally get them signed up for the event.

The deadline to get your teams in is July 1st.  The field is looking good this year.  It will have to be after all, since the winning team fired a 59 last year!  Not to worry however as many places and prizes are going to be awarded for those that don't get their team score under 60!  Below is a list of delights that wait you at this year's BMGA Guest.
18-holes of golf with cart
10-on course hole events (closest to the pin, longest drive, longest putt, those sorts of things)
Free beer on the course (delivered by some lovely ladies Phil is borrowing from Major's)
Dinner catered by Major’s Sports bar of Golden Valley
Free Cocktails and beer after the round (again lovely ladies will be pouring)
150 yard closest to the pin contest on #10 ($2 per ball, $5 for 3 balls, $100 cash to the winner)
Putting contest after the round on the putting green ($100 cash to the winner, $3 to play)
Huge raffle during/after dinner that includes but is not limited to drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, iron-sets, putters, GPS units, and many other huge prizes.
I look forward to seeing you all on July 8th, it's going to be a great event!  And don't forget to sign up soon as Schultz likes to cut people from the tournament who don't sign up in time (I know, he did it to me for The Rotation)!!

Week #8 and First Half Results

WOW, what a week!  First of all, my apologies for the extraordinarily late posting.  We had technical problems with the website that prevented me from posting.  Richard was able to straighten those out for me this morning, so I was finally able to post tonight.

Team 9 ran away with first place.  Doug Lang, and others have been unstoppable the last couple of weeks.  Congrats guys, enjoy your winnings and post those scores!  In a VERY tight race for 2nd, Team #14 edged out Team #7 by a half a point.  I double checked all of the cards from this week to make sure I got every score and every handicap just right - I did.

And finally, how about Howie Hoffman's week!  A 31 in league, which I'm certain is an ALL-TIME BMGA record.  He went on to play another nine, shooting 35 for a 66.  Congratulations Howie!  His performance netted him 2 nearies and the low gross.  Full results below:

Big Day for Brookview 16-Man Teams

Sunday, June 7th 2009...not just another hazy, cold Sunday morning. This is the day that both Brookivew 16-Man teams won for the first time on the same day.

The Class B team was on the road at Braemar and was not phased by the cold, windy, drizzly at times conditions. The team managed their way around to a 17 to 7 victory, moving them to 2-0 on the season and in fist place in the class. The day was highlighted by Team Nick's dramatic comeback win. With 4 holes to play, Hendy/Schultz were down 3 and looking dead in the eyes at a 3-0 defeat when the magic began. The duo was able to win holes 15 and 16 to bring the match to 1 down. Then came number 17, one of the most difficult holes of the day, Scott Hartmann was sited hitting Driver on the Par-3 earlier in the day to set up a fantastic birdie. With one of the Braemar players in his pocket, both Nicks had putts for par for to take an improbable lead in the match. Hendy was first to putt and drained a 10 footer and followed with a modest fist-pump. The Braemar player then curled his bid for par around the cup. Match all-square. On 18, it looked like the dramatic comeback may fall just short with both Braemar players 12-15 feet away for birdie and Schultz looking over his 35-foot attempt. Hendy had already raced a 50-foot birdie attempt by the hole. Schultz steadied over the putt and curled in the long birdie!! The Braemar boys, now stunned by this turn of events and by Schultz's monumental Tiger Woods fist-pump both missed their putts and Team Nick was able to win the match 2-1.

Class CC was at home vs Pheasant Acres and played beautifully to bounce back from their early-season defeat at the hands of the Links. The CC boys were able to win every match throughout the day and post a final score of 16.5-7.5. The young gun pairing of Bruggeman/Spessard led the charge with a clean sweep, 3-0, of their opponents. When asked for comment after the round, acting captain Josh Mueller had nothing but good things to say about his team's performance: "You know, the boys hung in there well today. I was getting a little nervous when I saw Big Sexy almost take a header into the creek on #4, but he was able to steady himself and hang in there to halve the match."

Great job guys!! Next matches are July 12th:

Class B at Highland National

Class CC at Timber Creek

Greek Scramble Results

The first event in the race for the BMGA Cup took place on Saturday. The weather was a bit on the nippy side for the early morning tee times, about 40 degrees with a 10-20 mph wind but there was no frost or rain to be concerned about.

Howard Hoffman captained his team to one-shot victory to claim his second straight Greek Scramble championship. The winning team finished at -3, one stroke ahead of two teams. Late bogies played a huge factor for many teams on Saturday.

I'd like to thank all of you for participating in the event and you will all be rewarded with 50 BMGA Cup points for playing. The winners will also take home the following:

WNL Week #1 4/22/09 Summary

Week 1 is in the books.  The weather held out to make for a fine start to the 2009 WNL.  Results are now posted on the League Info page.  One observation - lot's of new guys this year!  Hopefully I've met just about all you new guys, if not feel free to come say hello.  Don't be shy, introduce yourself around.  Veterans, please do your part to help show the new guys the ropes.  Teach them how the scoring works, etc.

Wednesday Night League is Full!!

The Wednesday night league is full, 154 players strong.  Thanks to all the new members for joining and the returning members.  Our membership is what continues to make our league one of the most enjoyable in Minnesota.  Even during this difficult economic environment it is great to know that the BMGA is alive and strong!  It is going to be a great year!

Now just because the Wednesday Night League is full, don't think for a second that our league is full.  There are still plenty of open spots to fill for the weekend tournaments.  As a matter of fact, a member that doesn't play in the Wednesday Night League has just as much of a chance to win the hallowed BMGA cup as one that does.  There are ten weekend tournaments throughout the year and each is a blast to play in.  So if you were one of the unfortunate souls that were unable to make it into the Wednesday Night League, I whole heartedly encourage you to still join the BMGA and play in the weekend tournaments.

Thanks to all those that helped out in this year's membership drive.  Brookview staff, the BMGA board, and anyone else I am forgetting, we couldn't have done this without you!

I look forward to seeing you all at the Spring Social on the 15th!

Membership Update

A couple more updates for the membership.

For those of you interested to know, Bob Boufford was the winner of the free WNL fees.  Bob has been with the club for 16 years.  It is great to see a long standing member win this great prize!!  Congratulations Bob!

Ben wanted me to remind everyone that the Rules Meeting will be held April 2nd at 6:30 in the Grill area of the Pro Shop.  This will be a great opportunity for members to hear from the MGA about Brookview specific rules and how to handle them.  Drinks and appetizers will be provided.  Everyone is invited to attend.  The grill holds about 75 so you may want to get there early and claim your seat.

The social night for WNL will be April 15th, starting around 4:30, make sure to get your taxes done early.  Burgers, hotdogs, and drinks will be provided.  Teams for the WNL will be determined by that time so come on out and get to know your fellow teammates.  We will again be doing the 3 club 5 hole par 3 challenge.  There will be  a tee sheet at the par 3 course that day, sign up when you get there.  Make sure you show up early so you have an opportunity to play in this fun event.  I hope to see everyone there.

Spring Meeting is quickly approaching

The annual BMGA spring membership meeting is fast approaching.  it is taking place this Friday March 20th at 6:30 p.m. at the Brookview Community Center located above the pro shop at the Brookview Golf Course.  Come sign up for the 2009 season, reminisce about winter travels over free drinks, entertain the chance of winning door prizes, and enjoy the witty banter of Dan "The Common Man" Cole.  That's right, Ben Disch has been in contact with The Common Man and he has accepted an invitation to speak at our illustrious meeting.  My guess is he'll even stay and partake in a few libations with BMGA members.  Whether you love him or hate him, there's no doubt he will bring some great conversation to our meeting!!

Along with banter from Common, there are many other reasons to attend including an update on Brookview from Ben, an update on Wednesday Night League from Brad, and an update on weekend tournaments including all the information you need about the ALL NEW BMGA CUP from Nick.  We may also hear from the new Pros working the practice tees at Brookview!  All of this including a chance to win great door prizes including free Wednesday Night League fees to one lucky winner.  Be sure to pay your dues and Wednesday Night League Fees on or before the spring meeting to be eligible.  Applications will be available at the meeting or you can download one here.

Also remember that new members to the BMGA in 2009 will receive a free 18 hole round compliments of Brookview!!

I look forward to beginning the 2009 season with all of you!  See you Friday!

Individual Match Play Champion

For the Individual Match play Championship,  Roger Hamm played Craig Popp.  They were the first tee time off on Sunday with fog and lots of dew.  How much for dew sweepers?  Hamm is giving 12 shots to Popp.  They halve the first 3 holes.  Then Hamm wins the next 3 holes to go 3 up.  Then Popp wins 7 and 8 (with a nice par) to move it back to a 1up lead for Hamm.  Then on 9 Hamm hits the cart path and ends up in the water but scrambles back to push the hole and take a 1 up lead at the turn.  Hamm moves it back to 3up through 14.  Then on 15 they both hit decent, but short drives.  Popp tops his layup shot but makes a great recovery and matches a bogey by Hamm to win the hole and is 2 down with 3 remaining.  On 16 Hamm has a 5 foot putt for a par to close it out, after Popp scores a 7 (net 6).  With knocking knees he misses the putt, and Popp remains 2 down.  On 17 Hamm hits to about 12 feet to really put the pressure on Popp.  Popp hits a poor tee shot and ends up rolling his 4th shot in the hole from off the green.  Hamm now has 3 putts to win the match and the championship.  With less pressure than on 16 Hamm nearly makes the birdie and wins with a 3 & 1 victory.  Congratulations to Roger Hamm our new Individual Match Play Champion.

2 Man Match Play Champions

In the Championship match on Sunday the "New Machine" of Bialke and Medina needed an extra hole to close out Chris Wrecza and Kevin Schultz.  The match was almost closer than the score indicated.  With a birdie by Chris on the first hole they took an early 1 up lead. A par by Medina on 2 moved it back to all square.  A par by Schultz on 3 moved them back to 1up.  A birdie on 5 by Schultz moved them to 2 up.  Pars by Medina and Schultz at 7 kept Schultz and Wrecza at 2 up.  A par by Medina on 8 moved the New Machine closer only down one. A par on 9 by Bialke and Wrecza had Schultz/Wrecza 1 up at the turn.  Then it was time for the New machine to make a move.  Both Bialke and Medina pared the 10th hole to edge out the par by Wrecza to move the match back to all square.

It didnt last long, on the 11th, Wrecza made another par to move 1up as both Medina and Bialke failed to make bogey. Making his 4th par in a row at 12 Wrecza pushed the lead back to 2 up.  Bialke proceded to make a par on the 13th and with a stroke on the hole beat a par by Wrecza to move it back to only one up for Schultz/Wrecza.  Over the next three holes the New Machine bogied while Wrecza pared.  Thats 8 pars in a row by Wrecza for those of you who are counting.  On to 17. Schultz misses a 4 foot slider and the hole is halved.  On to 18.  The New Machine is now dormie.  On the box 4 perfect tee shots sail accross the pond finding the fairway or the right rough.  Bialke hits first and finds the trap on the right.  Schultz hits his shot, short and right.  Medina hits his shot just short of the trap on the right in the rough.  He then proceds to hit a perfect chip that finishes 2 feet from the cup.  Conceded for a net birdie, Wrecza fails to chip in and the match moves to sudden death.  Medina is first off the tee and his tee shot is in the left rough by the tree line.  Bialke, Wrecza and Schults procede to all stripe their drives down the middle of the fairway just in front of the 150 marker.  Schultz hits his approach shot to the back of the green with a front pin location.  Bialke and Wrecza both miss the green.  Medina has no other option than to punch out and his shot runs forever and ends up 10 feet past the green in the rough.  He then proceds to out do himself and chips to within 1 foot.  He taps in for net birdie. With one shot left and 70 feet to go Schultz runs his ball just over the edge of the cup nearly pushing the hole and exteding the the match.   It was a much closer match than the score indicated.

Brookview 16-Man Team Completes Perfect Season

Your Brookview 16-Man Team finished a remarkable undefeated season yesterday at Eagle Valley Golf Club in Woodbury versus the team from River Falls GC. The Brookview boys took advantage of calm weather conditions and played beautifully in the 17.5 to 6.5 victory. That makes six wins and no losses on the season. The featured pairing of the day was Tom Nestvold and Nick Schultz. Nestvold and Schultz started off quickly with birdies on the first and third holes and didn't look back. In the end, the duo combined to make 9 birdies against 1 bogey for a team score of 64.

Great job this week guys and great playing all season long! Make sure to block 5/3/08, 6/7/09, 7/12/09 and 8/2/09 off your calendar for next year's matches. Hopefully the victory will move us into Class B 24-Man Team so more guys can get out there and compete.

Championship

Well, the year has come to an end. Last night the Scrappers and the Teebusters battled the impending weather and finished the year with a riveting match. It not only came down to the last hole, it was the final putt of the season by Mr. Sanford that clinched the win by 1 point for Al Rosby and his team 8 Scrappers. Mr. Maass and his team were gracious in defeat and congratulated their opponents before finishing the keg of beer and talking about what could have been. I heard more than once, a putt here or there and the day could have ended differently. Anyways, congrats to both teams for a stellar year. Both teams cashed in on the year with each taking home $30 for the semifinal win and team 8 taking home another $35 each for the championship!

Your champions

Al Rosby, Roger Hamm, Pete Griffin, Dan Anderson, Steve Shellenbaum, Emmy Yates, Steve Langsdale, Tom Nestvold, Jim Sanford, Mike Deede, and Tim Lueder

2nd Place

Ed Maass, Mike Fowler, Reggie Hoehn, Gerald Daniel, Yury Millman, Jerry Thrall, Joel Winspear, Gary Scharmer, Bill Cook, Richard Courtney, and Steve Slivken

Yury Millman (8) and Mike Deede (4) had the nearies for the round ($15 each).

THE 2008 BMGA SEASON IN SENIORS

Last weekend concluded the 2008 formal events for the BMGA’s senior contingent with the Super Seniors (over 65) and Seniors (over 55) club championship tournaments.  In the one-day Super Senior event Bob Littlefield was the winner with a net 73, followed by Mike Essma in second with a net 76 and Jim Sanford got third with a net 77.  Several of the men who played, and played well, are in their mid-80s and several others are in their mid-70s, so this is a hardy group of contestants.  Let’s all applaud them.

In the Senior event Championship Flight Jim Sanford again won the club championship with gross scores of 80-77 = 157.  Bob Boufford took second place at 172 while Jack Zachow and Randy Zedjlik tied for third at 178.   In the First Flight Jack Zachow won with a net 144, with Bob Boufford at 146 taking second and Cory Lomen third at 149.  In the Second Flight Randy Zedjlik won with net 152, followed by Steve Slivken at 159 and a tie for third between Don Scheunemann and Reggie Hoehn at 160.

The golf course was in terrific shape and the seniors would like to thank the Brookview proshop, grill, range and ranger, and grounds staffs for all their help

It was also a banner year for the BMGA 8-man senior interclub team.  The MPGA this year expanded the summer-long event with the result that our team played three home-and-home matches, against Manitou Ridge, The Jewel, and Pebble Creek.   The team was more competitive than it has been in recent seasons and we actually won the match against The Jewel, the first win in many years.  Unfortunately, Pebble Creek was very strong and ended our season, but hopes are high for 2009.  Many thanks to all the players and special thanks to Al Rosby, who stepped in for Jim Sanford and did most of the organizing.

Pyle captures Club Championship / OBrien holds off late charge for 1st Flight

The weekend was perfect.  The weather was great, the wind was calm and the course was in fantastic shape and it all setup a great weekend of golf.

Derek Pyle was able to hold off the charge and made a long birdie putt on 18 which would prove to be the difference between victory and a playoff.  Shooting a +4 (148) for the two days, Pyle was able to keep enough distance between himself and the rest of the field.  Brian Woessner followed up a day one 71 with a 78 for a +5 (149) for second place.  Third place went to Howard Hoffman and Scott Hartmann.  Hartmann shoots the low score on Sunday (73) which was enough for +6 (150).  Kelly Gallagher gets a top nod for the lowest score on either day with a -2 (70) on Saturday.

In the first flight, it was all smooth sailing for Dan O'Brien who went into the day with a four stroke lead over everyone.  But Todd Peterson made a big run and when it all finished was only one stroke behind.  O'Brien captures the 1st Flight with a two-day total of 164.  Peterson finished second with 165 and Steve Susich finished third with a 167.  Richard Brynteson gets a top nod for the lowest score on either day with a +8 (80) on Sunday.

In the second flight, there was no stopping Gary Ridout.  Entering Sunday with a three stroke lead after posting an 82, he comes back on Sunday and earns not only the top nod for the lowest score all weekend in the flight (81) but captures the second flight with a four stroke lead.  Second place went to Peter Steichen and third place was a tie between Bob Boufford and Jim Husnik.

In the Handicap flight, when everything was said and done we needed extra holes to determine our winner.  Jon Gaasedelen and Gerald Meier both finished with +2 (146) for the two total.  After both players splashed balls into the water on 9 on the first playoff hole, Gaasedelen was able to hold off Meier on the second playoff hole to capture the Handicap Flight championship.  Third place went to Ermim Cicic who missed the playoff by only one stroke.

In the end it was a great weekend of golf.  We learned a few things along the way.  We learned what it means to honor the rules of golf and the integrity that comes with playing the game.  At the end Kelly calls himself for misplaying a ball that unfortunately costs him the Club Championship but earns the respect of a lot of people along the way.  There is more than just winning and losing and Kelly showed us how to deal with an unfortunately situation.  I'm sure he will be back next year more eager than ever to put his name where we all know it belong - as Club Champion.

Playoffs

Playoffs-
Congrats to the Teebusters (team 3) and the Scrappers (team 8) for dominant wins in the playoffs. That sets us up quite the championship. The tee times will be 4:33, 4:42, 4:51, and 5:00 off the front. A side note for Mr. Hoffman, congrats on the 34, which was Nick-esque!
Next week is only for the playoff teams. No open sign up.
This week’s nearies were: ($15 each)

4 – Bot
8 – Sutton
12 – Lomen
17 – Lueder

Congrats boys!

Good luck to team 3 and team 8 next week. It will be a well deserved championship!

Week 16 Results

If anybody has an idea on how we can help the low handicappers win some prizes or money next year, please let me know. I feel so bad that it is just impossible for them to ever win anything. They all play so great and never win prizes, points, nearies, or anything. I really feel quite bad for them. Do you have any ideas Nick? Maybe you can consult with your buddy Nick! Oh wait, I think Nick is sitting down with the city of Golden Valley right now seeing if he can exchange his chits from the year for an ownership stake in the course. If only the State Am was played at our beloved course!

Playoffs and second half winners

Congrats to the Tee Busters, Rough Riders, Cannonball Coming, and Scrappers. They are our 4 playoff teams and will be playing next week.

The Rough Riders (overall points early league) will face the Tee Busters (wild card)

The Scrappers (late league first half) will face Cannonball coming (late league second half)

The winners play the following week for the league championship

The Tee Busters edged out the Rough Riders by .5 points in the second half of the early league ($25 and $5 for each team member respectively) while Cannonball Coming had a decisive win to close the year and beat The Brookview Eagles for the late league second half ($25 and $10 for each team member respectively)

Again, thanks for a great year. We will see you all next year!

Presidents Cup Results

The winner of the Blue Gross flight was Howard Hoffmann.  He shot 74.  Second place was Kelly Gallagher with a 75.  Tim Lueder rounded out the top three with a 76.  Notable was Erik Swanson who had the lead at the turn with a 35, but his string of 6's on the back took him out of contention.  Can Hoffmann win both the Presidents Cup and Club Championship?  We will have to wait and see.

The highly contested Blue Net flight went to Dan O'Brian who shot a 78 for a net 65.  2nd and 3rd went to Paul Yakshe (net 66) and Al Rosby (net 69).  Both Al and Paul were slow to get out of the gate each being 5 over after 3 holes.  4th place went to Doug Paquette with a net 73.

In the White Net flight Randy Zejdlik strutted up the the scoring table thinking that his net 60 was good enough to win.  Only to be hart broken to find out that Dan Anderson who's back nine of 37 shot a net "59". Taking 3rd place was Gene Scheffler with a solid net 70.

Now for the most important flight.  With a huge field of 4, Curtis Medina won the Presidents flight with a net 71.  Bill Alexander and Doug Paquette finished tied for second with net 73's.  Jason Noble finished ( a great feat in and of itself) to come in fourth.

CTP's       Paul Gerber #4,  Doug Campbell #8,  Tim Lueder #12, and Dan Anderson on #17 who's ugly low draw, bounced, hit the pin, and almost went in.

Thanks to Brookview and staff for a great tournament.

It has to feel great to shoot a 34, I did through 6 yesterday and it was awesome, but to get stuck in a tie, that has to sting. Poor Kelly Gallagher, shoots a gross 35 and looses the match to Mr. Lueder, ouch! Well done boys!

A few things are still up for grabs in the final week. Low gross average for the year, Hoffman vs. Schultz, .06 separates them. A late entry of Swanny could capture it, but with only 3 weeks played, that may not be enough to qualify. Wildcard appears to be locked up by an early league team, and the second half is still up for grabs with Cannonball coming holding a slight lead. Good luck in the final week!

Brookview 16-Man Team Charges Into Playoffs

Last Sunday, your Brookview 16-Man Team became the first team in MPGA 16-Man Class C South Division history to complete an undefeated season. The boys looked sharp throughout the day and were able to top fellow undefeated (coming into the match) Phalen by an astounding 21.5 to 2.5 final score. The win puts the Brookview squad atop the standings as the #1 seed heading into the semi-final playoff round vs. Como Park on September 7th. The venue for the playoff match has yet to be determined.

Captain Nick Schultz posted the low round of the day on Sunday, bogeying the 18th hole for a round of even Par 72. Schultz and partner Erik Swanson played in the final group and were able to take all 3 points in their match by unleashing a flurry of birdies on the unsuspecting Phalen anchor-team. Overall, there were a lot of great rounds put up by the Brookview team including a 74 by late substitute Josh Mueller. "Schultzy gave me the call late last night and asked me if I wanted to play. Apparently Chaz Tsatsos came down with an undisclosed injury on Saturday and he couldn't make it. I was feeling pretty solid after my 87 earlier that day at Highland National, so I jumped at the opportunity to get in on the action." Josh was able to shake off the ill-effects of his Highland round and carry Brian Woessner around the course on Sunday.

Congrats on a great regular season, guys! Let's keep this momentum going through the playoffs.

Wow, what a week. I have never entered so many scores in the 30’s. I wish I would have played, I guess you all had the wind at your back every hole. The supreme player of the day was Nick Schultz, 34. Congrats again (however I am getting sick of writing his name) don’t any of you good golfers have anything for him!

Brookview 16 Man Team Crushes Pioneer Creek Golf Club

The Brookview 16-Man Team had a most impressive performance on Sunday at Pioneer Creek Golf Club. The men had to go on the road to Pioneer Creek and play a team coming off a dominant win last month. A strong showing would move the Brookview team ever closer to a playoff spot later this summer.

The course and the weather were the biggest challenges on Sunday. The temperature was comfortable, but the wind was whipping all day long. A steady 25 mph wind with gusts up to 40 mph proved to be a challenge for the Hendrikson/Schultz team which was the only team to actually lose points to the opponents on the day. "I think a couple of my high cuts actually netted negative yardage." Said a confused Schultz following the round. Fortunately, the rest of the boys were able to battle the elements and capture an astonishing 20 out of 24 possible points.

The round of the day came from Howie Hoffman, who made the turn at 2 under and finished with 73 on the day. Nick Hendrikson and Steve Merriman also put up great rounds of 74.

This makes the team 3-0 on the year and in a prime position to make the playoffs. Next month, the team will take on Phalen at Brookview to try to post a 4-0 record as the regular season comes to a close. All BMGA-ers and their families should come out to the course on 8/3 to watch your 16-Man Team make a run at history and become the first team in MPGA 16-Man Team Competition to go undefeated in the regular season.

Week 8

Yes, the points for the week were not counted because many groups did not have the chance to finish.  Since we are using a wild card team at the end of the year, and the wild card to get into the playoffs is total points for the year, we will not count the early league this week as well.  Congrats to team 1, the Rough Riders and team 8, The Scrappers on first half wins ($25 each player).  Also congrats to team 3, The Tee Busters ($5 each) and team 12 ($10 each) for second place finishes.

We did decide to payout the closest to the pins this week.  Here are the winners.

8-Man Senior Team Rips Tarp Off Big Game

BMGA's 8-man Senior Team opened the 2008 season Tuesday, May 6, with a closely contested match against Manitou Ridge.  Although things looked promising at first, the Manitou boys had hidden their strength in the back end of the line-up and they overcame Brookview's early lead to win 8 to 4.

No matter!  BMGA is again cometitive in this event and victories are sure to come soon.  Thanks, meantime, to all the players -- Larson, Sanford, Rosby, Lomen, Thrall, Yates, Boufford, and Zedjlik -- and to the Brookview staff and management for being so hospitable.

Brookview 16-Man Update

The Brookview 16-Man Team made its 2008 debut on Sunday at Wirth Golf Course. The boys battled the hills and muddy lies to a 14.5 to a 9.5 victory. We don't need to talk about what happened 3 years ago when the team made its last visit to Wirth. Let's just say this year was a very nice improvement.

Kelly Gallagher whipped the gallery into a frenzy with his dramatic eagle on the par 5 sixth hole. Said Gallagher after the round, "When that eagle putt dropped, I knew it was going to be a good day for our team and for all of Brookview." Gallagher would later almost lose his shoe near the hazard to the right of the ninth hole. Nick Hendrikson almost made history on the 16th hole when his tee shot on the par 3 came to within inches of a hole-in-one. Hendy would settle for birdie and go skinless for the day. Matt Krasen was the medalist with a fine 77, Matt said the 77 felt like a 71 out there as he was cleaning the mud out of his jeans in the parking lot.

Overall, the course in much better condition than expected. The rains of Thursday and Friday softened it up a bit, but the greens were in great shape and the Wirth team was a pleasure to play with. Team Brookview now comes home for a June 1st match vs. Dwan.

Good playing guys and we'll see you next month on our home course!

Team Majors

As most of you have seen we have one innovative team who went out and got a team sponsor.  I love when people think outside the box.  You will see them wearing their green and black all year.  The good news is we got Majors to agree to being kind of a league sponsor as well.  No, you all don't get shirts, but the food and beverage discounts on Wednesday night are open to the whole league.  With good Wednesday night support Majors has also agreed to contribute handsomely to our Guest Day.  So you all are invited to join Team Majors after each Wednesday and enjoy some food and more importantly some beverages at a nicely discounted price.  Cheers!

Wednesday Night League

Chuck Ellis Wins Individual Match Play Tournament

It was a hot windy day at the old histrionic Brookview when Pete Steichen and Chuck Ellis met for the 2007 Individual Match Play Championship. What many in the club say is the 2nd hardest title to win at the BMGA.

The conditions were rough, both players had to deal not only with the wind, gusts to 30 MPH, the course and the numerous leaves now falling on the course. Both players complained about the lateness of the match but struggled through the afternoon sun to ensure we would be able to crown our champion at the upcoming Fall Banquet & Awards ceremony.

While nether player lit the score board up with a career round, understandable considering the playing conditions it was Ells who came out on top as the 2007 Individual Match Play Championship. In what was probably Ellis's last swan song with the BMGA, he won the match 2 & 1 after Pete was not able to make par on the 17th hole.

Congratulations to Chuck for winning his 2nd Individual Match Play Championship at Brookview. The tournament committee would like to thank all the participants who played in this year's tournament.

Chits will be available for pick up at Brookview later this week or at the Banquet .  If you won at least one round you will have chits available.  I will send out a winners sheet later today to all participants.

3 Ball Winners

With the best show of consistent golf, Team 9 (Roberts, Aamot, Noble, and Mangold) won with a two day total of 402. Team 11 (Lang, Rosby, Woessner, Medina) made a charge on Sunday to capture second with a two day total of 408.  The Saturday leaders, Team 10 (Hahka, Kevin Schultz, Jeff Olson, and Gaasedelen), did a Sunday slide to 3rd place with a team total of 414.  Team 3 finished just out of the money with a total of 415.

Closest to the pin on Saturday was Ted Roberts on #4, Larry Hahka on #8, Tom Pederson on #12, and Greg Larson stuck it to 9' on #17. On Sunday Rob Bialon was closest on #8, Bill Guthrie was closest on #17, Mike Essma had the longest putt on #9, and Ted Roberts had the longest putt on #18.

With a total of 88 rounds over the two days there were only 12 rounds of net 72 or better.  Doug Lang's net 68 on Sunday was the low net of the event. His two birdies on #8 and #12 for net "1's" helped his team surge up the leader board.  Ted Roberts had two great rounds of golf with a net 69 and a net 70.  Its easy to see how his team won when you combine his two scores with a net 69 by Aamot and a net 70 by Noble.  Erik Swanson had good rounds with a net 72 and a net 71.  Most of the net scores were in the upper 70's and low 80's.

There were 9 net "1's"  for the tournament.  Team 11 shot a 94 on the front on Sunday for the low 9 holes of the event.  Teams 8 & 9 were  just 2 shots back with a 96 on Sunday.  Team 10 had the low score on the back with a 98 on Saturday.

The shot of the weekend had to be by Eric Clark.  His tee shot on #5 was in the bunker on the right.  He hits his 5 iron as hard as he can.  It goes off the lip of the bunker, goes off the side of the tree, goes through the next tree just catching some leaves, hits wood in the big oak tree on the right of the green, bounces on to the green 15 feet from the hole. So it was bunker lip, tree, tree, tree, onto the green.  His birdie putt narrowly missed as it rolled past.

Thanks to everyone who played and waited for he frost delay on Saturday.  Thanks to Brookview and staff for a good conditions and good service.  Thanks to everyone who helped with the scoring.

Curt

2007 League Champion

Congratulation to Team #8 ( Al Rosby ).  They are the 2007 WNL Champions.  The Championship Match against Team #3 ( Larry Larson ) was closely fought with most matches being very even.  The score was Team #8 - 58pts, Team #3 - 46pts.

I would like to thank all Team Captains and all the players for a great year.

Jeff Olson - WNL Director.

White and Campbell capture 2-Man Match Play Championship

White and Campbell capture 2-Man Match Play Championship Image
Sheldon, Larry, Max & Doug

Congratulations to Max White and Doug Campbell on capturing the 2007 BMGA Men's League 2-Man Match Play Championship.  With 32 teams starting the event back in June the finale was held this week.  After steam rolling through their competition all tournament long the Team of White/Campbell matched up against Sheldon Silberman and Larry Larson to decide who would be this years champion.

It was a great day of golf but White/Campbell were simply too much.  Down 3 at the turn, the match concluded on 15 for a 4&3 victory.  "I am surprised we made it to 15.", Sheldon uttered at the end of the round, "We didn't play very well and they played great."  Campbell's 77 and White's (79) were too much for Sheldon's (99) and Larry's (84).

Congrats to everyone who played in this years 2-Man Match Play.

SWANSON REPEATS AS CLUB CHAMPION

Defending Champion Erik Swanson won a tense two-hole playoff Sunday to win the BMGA Club Championship for the second year in a row.  Swanson edged Kelly Gallagher after the two had finished regulation play at nine-over 153, with both men returning identical 77-76 cards.  First round leader Derek Pyle -- with a tournament best 73 -- finished one shot out of the playoff, while Nick Schultz, Tim Lueder, and Brian Woessner tied for fourth at 156.

Playing conditions were very difficult due to all the recent rain and the heavy dew both mornings.  The lush golf course played several hundred yards longer than the card.  Despite that, however, the champ flight produced 36 birdies and one eagle, Swanson’s three on the second Sunday morning.

For those who like statistics here are some others:

Champ field scoring average:       Sat: 78.6           Sun: 79.6

Easiest hole:                             9, played to an average of 4.1
Hardest hole:                             18 Sunday: played to 5.1

No birdied scored on:                 5 and 14 (this is remarkable)

Scoring by hole class:                Par 3s:  +37

                                                            Par 4s:  +90

                                                            Par 5s:  +40

In the First Flight (gross scores) Josh Mueller was the winner on a match of cards with Perry Jacobsen.  Both men returned fine totals of 162.  Brad Kadue finished third with 164.   Not to be outdone by the champ flight, the guys in this flight also carded 18 birdies.

The Second Flight (also gross) saw Paul Yakshe win, also on a match of cards, with Cory Lomen.  Both men had 168 for the two rounds.  Third place was Jim Husnik at 172.  Noteworthy: this flight also shot nine birdies!

In the Third Flight (net) senior Jack Zachow won with a great 73/72 = 145.  Jack just got by another senior, Mike Essma, who returned 146.  In third place was Eric Clark, who shot 66/82 = 148.  Eric’s net 66 on Saturday was the best net score of the entire weekend.

Despite the wet conditions to start, the weekend weather was perfect and the condition of the Brookview greens was fabulous.  The whole field would like to thank Greg Spencer and his crew.  Thanks also to Kris Tovson and her clubhouse and ranger gang for all their assistance. And the BMGA Board would also like to thank all the players for doing their best, under difficult conditions, to keep play moving.  It wasn’t perfect but it was a whole lot better than previous years.

SENIORS AND SUPER SENIORS SHOOT GRASS OFF COURSE! SANFORD WINS AGAIN.

Cruising along behind the regular club tournament this weekend the Seniors and Super Seniors conducted their annual championships.  With a gross score of 81/76 = 157 Jim Sanford won the Senior Club Championship for the seventh time in eight years, despite undergoing abdominal vivisection 20 days ago.   Grossing out the other competitors by flashing his scars, Sanford eased to victory by actually playing decent golf on Sunday.  Second place was taken by Cory Lomen at 168 and third place was Bob Boufford at 173.

In the First Flight Cory Lomen’s net 136 (69-67!) lapped the field, with Jack Zachow taking second place at 145 and Jerry Thrall on third at 154.  In the Second Flight Mike Essma returned 146 net to edge Bob Littlefield (148).  Jim Sanford took third at 153.

In the Super Senior Event (for men 65 and older) the winner was Jerry Thrall, with a net 73.  Jerry was on the Golden Valley Park Board back in 1967 and actually was instrumental in the City buying the golf course.  So Jerry obviously has “insider” knowledge.  Second place was taken by Mike Essma with a net 76 and third by Bob Littlefield with a net 79.

He didn’t win, but those of us who got to watch Don Scheunemann (in his mid-80s!) yesterday think he deserves a trophy all his own.  Don must have lipped out nine putts and he came within those inches of making about six pars.  His tee-to-green game was perfect.

Like their younger cousins, the seniors would all like to thank the golf course staff and the grounds staff for a great two days.

Format Adjustment for Club Championship

Unfortunately incorrect format was posted with the flyer for the Club Championship.  It should have read:

The tournament will be a 36-hole, stroke play, non-handicapped event played on Saturday and Sunday.  Prior to play on Saturday, the field will be flighted by handicap.  The lowest quarter (1/4) of the players in the field will be placed into the Championship Flight.  Any player who wishes to play in the Championship flight can elect to play in the Championship flight even if they are not in the lowest 1/4 of players.  The remaining players will be evenly divided among three flights.  For example if the tournament is 45 players.  The lowest 11 players would be placed in the Championship Flight.  4 players who were not among the lowest quarter of players elect to play in the Championship flight.  The remaining 30 players would be equally divided into three flights of 10.

All players will play from the Blue/White Tees on Saturday. Champion & 1st  flights will play from the Blue tees on Sunday. 2nd and 3rd (handicap flight) will play from the white tees on Sunday. The lowest, 2-day gross score playing from the blue tees will become the Club Champion. To be eligible as Club Champion the player must have played in at least three BMGA events prior to the Club Champion or have played in BMGA’s Wednesday night league.

This was a change approved prior to last years Club Championship and was used during last years tournament.  I apologize for any confusion this may cause.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Ellis win President's Flight Again; Lueder mentally prepares for the curse

The weather from the night before had cleared.  Brookview took over 2 inches of rain in little over an hour but the course drained quickly and was in great shape for the 2007 installment of the President's Cup.

In what is often considered the warm-up for the Club Championship, Tim Lueder lead the blue gross flight by shooting a one over 73 from the "tips".  The course was setup to challenge anyone playing the blue tees as the tees were as far back as humanly possible.  Lueder now faces the challenge of breaking the President's Cup curse.  Much like not wanting to win the Master's Par 3 tournament the winner of the blue gross flight has had to endure the same problems two weeks later at the Club Championship.  Lueder said he was up to the challenge and looked forward to defeating this silly curse.

In the President's Flight, Chuck Ellis won another cup.  Missing the cup last year by only a stroke, Ellis stepped up the challenge and defeated fellow past-president Bill Alexander by two strokes with a even par net score.

In the Blue Net flight, Steve Couture shot a one-under 71 (net) to capture the Blue Net championship.  In the White Net, Sheldon Silberman shot a handicap committee red flag round of 86 for a net 64.

Congrats to everyone.  For full results including hole-by-hole stats, head over to the history page.

Week 13 Update - WNL

With only three weeks to play here is what we have.

In early league, Team 4 has a 20 point lead over first half and semi-final bound Team 3.

In the late league, Team 12 is on the verge of taking both the first and second half wins with a 14 point lead over Team 9.  If Team 12 accomplishes this feat, it means that the team with the second most points in late league with will Team 12 in the semi-final.  Right now that would be team 8 who holds a 50 point lead over everyone.

Lastly, here are some stats that I thought would be fun to share:

Lowest Gross Average Score Most Points by Individual
Tim Lueder (36.33 - Team 8)
Brian Woessner (38.11 - Team 12)
Tom Nestvold (38.33 - Team 8)
Nick Schultz (38.83 - Team 7)
Charlie Tsatsos (38.9 - Team 11)
Jim Husnik (90 - Team 12)
Jeff Olson (86 - Team 2)
Chris Ostrom (82.5 - Team 10)
Al Rosby (82 - Team 8)
Dan Gustafson (78.5 - Team 12)

Good luck to all the teams as the regular season wraps up.

Guest Day Results

It was unlike any Wednesday we had all year.  The weather was great and the sun was out.  It was another great Guest Day event.  Added this year was the new flighted system of tournament play with both a handicap and a callaway flight.

In the handicap flight, a shootout took place between Team Clarke and Team Scheunemann.  Scheunemann's team going 24 under on the front nine; team Clarke rebounded on the back nine to shoot an impressive 20 under par but that wasn't enough to overcome Team Scheunemann who finished the day 37 under par.  Team Clarke finished second with 36 under par and Team Maday finished in 3rd place at 22 under par.

In the callaway flight, Team Ellis/Rosby ran away from the field shooting 20 under par.  In second place, Team Mueller shot 15 under par and in third place Team Steichen shoot 11 under par.

For complete results to the tournament history page for more details.  Full hole-by-hole scoring should be available later this week online.

2-Man Rotation Results

When you are the defending champions of a tournament the pressure is on for you to respond to the challenge.  And that is exactly what the team of Kelly Gallagher and Nick Schultz did at last weekends 2-Man Rotation.  Finishing the round at a team score of 4 under par - 68 - Gallagher/Schultz ran away from the field to win by 4 strokes.  This marks the second year in a row that team Gallagher/Schultz has won the 2-Man Rotation.

Other winners include:

1st Flight: Larry Hahka and Doug Paquette
2nd Flight: Reginald Hoehn, Dean Temple
3rd Flight: Steven Klane, Samuel Thrune

Make sure to check our new hole-by-hole results page at:

http://www.bmga.org/historyDetails.aspx?tourID=102&search=tour

Congrats to everyone who played and made the 2-Man a success.

WNL 1st Half Winners

The Early League Champion is Team #3, The Gofors.  They are the winners by head to head tiebreaker.  Team #3 and Team #2 finished with 330 points.   Team #3 won both head to head matches during the 1st half.  The Late League winner is Team #12 with Team #8 coming in second.  Congratulations to the 1st half winners.

BMGA Senior 8-Man Team Plays Pebble Creek

On May 1, up in Becker, the BMGA's Senior 8-man team opened the interclub season with the front end of their home-and-home matches against Pebble Creek.  PB, for those of you who haven't been up there, is a very nice facility: 27 holes, in exceptionally good condition, the three nines quite difference in character.  Seniors play for $31 (including cart) Mon-Thursday all day and Friday-Sun after 1 pm.

The matches were tightly contested, but as usual in recent years, we Brookview men got shaded by a stronger team.  Sanford and Thrall, for example, were playing a 71-year-old two handicapper on their squad and quite a few of the Pebble Creekers were single digit.  Okay, okay, we didn't win but we all played well.

Many thanks to Cory Lomen, Emmy Yates, Doug Diedrich, Randy Zejdlik, Al Rosby and Jack Zachow, along with the aforementioned Jim Sanford and Jerry Thrall for making the drive and playing the event.  Everyone at Pebble Creek treated us handsomely - in the grill, in the proshop, in the restaurant - and we look forward to treating them just as well when
they come down here on May 15.

2006 Individual Match Play Champion

Congratulations to Richard Brynteson!  The 2006 BMGA Individual Match Play champion.  Richard won 3&2 over Al Rosby in the final match.  Thank you to everyone who played this year and made this a great year long event.

Jim Sanford Captures Senior Club Championship / Jim Price wins Super Senior

The BMGA Super Senior and Senior Championships were played the weekend of September 16-17 and the winner, as usual, was the golf course! And the weather. Saturday was a breezy but otherwise tolerable day, but Sunday we had close to a 30-mph wind out of the west and finger-numbing cold until later in the afternoon.

Normally pussycat holes like Number One were almost out of reach. And 15 was a par six for nearly everyone. The Senior Club champion (gross) was again Jim Sanford, who returned 79/82. As usual, Sanford was sputtering and fulminating about how he squandered much better scores, yada yada yada. Fortunately, he was ignored by virtually everyone. Bob Littlefield took second place while Jim Sicora and Jim Price tied for third. On the strength of two consecutive net 69s, Jim Price won both the Super Senior and Senior (net) titles. In the Super Senior Division (age 65 and up) Jim Ronning -- age 86!!! -- and Clem Zotta tied for second, while Jim Sicora showed. In the Senior Division (55 and up) Don Scheunemann, also in his 80s, came in second and Jim Sicora again copped third.

In a rare moment when he was not having a fit about his own play Tournament Chairman Sanford had this to say: "It was genuinely thrilling to see these men out here competing, and often competing well, 50+ years beyond the horizons of today's young people. I would be lathered in gratitude to think that, 20 years from now, I could be out here whacking it half as well as they do." Thanks to all the golf course staff who helped with planning and arrangements.

Swanson Captures 2006 Club Championship

Swanson Captures the 2006 Club Championship

Eric Swanson fired a 1 under 71 in the final round of the Brookview Mens Club Championship.  His two day total of even par 144 was 3 shots clear of first round leader Nick Schultz, who, as playing partner on the 24 man team, made for a cozy grouping on the final day.

Both players played steady golf – straight drives and many greens in regulation – a novel way to play the game in these quarters.

Here is a quick recap of the final round. Eric was one down at the start of the day. Nick bogeyed one. They both birdied number 2 and parred out 3-9. Swanny bogeyed ten missing a three foot comebacker. Nick bogeyed 12 to make it tied once again. The Swanny birdied fourteen with a fine wedge to about two feet. With good drives on 15 Nick pulled out his 3 wood on the second shot but the ball found its watery grave in Bassett creek. “I thought I got all of it” said Nick after the round. He wondered in disbelief as to why it didn’t make it over. Now Swanny had a three shot lead with 3 to go and he promptly missed the fairway left on 16. His second shot was a meager miss to the 240 mark of the fairway. But his 3 wood recovery was a majestic stroke landing softly on the green. His best shot of the day. He walked away with par on 16 as Nick narrowly missed a birdie attempt. They both missed birdies on 17 and it was all over except for the dreaded 18th tee ball. Swanny did not get all of it but it was enough to get directly over the murky waters.

The third place finishers of Steve Merriman, Kelly Gallagher, and myself, were mere bystanders at 151. Brian Woessner was three back until a faulty drive to the right on 7 left him behind the tallest grove of trees in Golden Valley. Maybe next year Brian.

The 1 handicapper was due to win the club championship. He finished 3rd in 2005 and 2nd in 2004. Congratulations Eric! You closed the deal in 2006.

24-Man Team Season Over

Well, it had to happen sometime...unfortunately, this season the Brookview 24-Man Team makes an earlier than usual exit from the season long MPGA tournament. Yesterday, the Brookview faithful made the trek down to River Oaks GC in Cottage Grove to complete the 2nd half of the home-and-home series. As many expected, the deficit from the 1st match was too much to overcome and River Oaks will move on to the semi-finals.

The day was not without highlights, though as the Woessner brothers provided many fireworks on Sunday. Split up by Captain Schultz for the first time this season, both Woessners fired team-best 73's fueled by many birdies throughout. Big Sexy made 3 birdies on the opening 9 to card a remarkable 34 and take all 3 points along with partner Josh Mueller and his frying pan irons. Big Sexy's little brother Brian also shot 73. He and partner Steve Wennblom pulled off the unprecented feat of winning 4 skins while losing all 3 points in their match. Amazing!

I'd like to thank all the guys who played in the 24-Man Team events this year. River Oaks will probably move up a level, so we can advance to the playoffs next year.

BMGA CUP

Thank you to everyone who participated. It was HOT day but luckily enough not as hot as predicted.  The tournament was even hotter. One point separated 1st and 3rd place. 42.5 to 41.5 with second place finishing right between them at 42.  Just 2 little putts separated 1st from third.  Thanks to everyone who signed up early and those who called last minute.  Special thanks to Clem Zotta who filled in at the last minute.  Most matches were in the 14 pt. to 10 pt. range.  High sub-team point total went to Larry Larson and Sheldon Silberman with 16 points.  There were three sub-teams with 15.5 points.  The hot individual was Richard Brynteson but he and Chuck Ellis lost 5 out of 6 points in alternate shot to the tough pair of Bob Boufford and Billy Griffin.  Another hot hand was Evan Johnson.  There were only 5 names on the closest to the pin markers.  Tough greens to hit or tough shots to beat.

2006 Individual Match Play

I would like to thank everyone who played in last Saturday's tournament.  We had some cool weather and no rain.  From what I hear most of the matches were competative.  Yours truely lost on the 20th hole ( #11 ) to my opponent who holed out from the fairway to win the hole and the match with an eagle.  I you have to lose,  you might as well lose by an eagle.

The Closest to the Pin winners are:

   Hole #4 - Tim Lueder

   Hole #8 - Curt Medina

   Hole #12 - Richard Brynteson

   Hole #17 - Jeff Olson

Winners of the first round, please schedule your next matches as soon as possible to keep the momentum going.  There are dates on top of the bracket pairings by when the next matches should be played.  Good luck in your future matches and thanks to all who played.

Jeff Olson - Tournament Director

Local Rules

In accordance with the Rules of Golf, Brookview or the BMGA may establish several Local Rules relative to the course or conditions of play.  This document outlines the local rules as established by the BMGA.

Tournament/League Rules

  • Measuring Devices
    • In accordance to 14-3/0.5 Local Rule Permitting Use of Distance-Measuring Device of the USGA, the BMGA allows the use of devices to measure distance.
    • Distance-Measuring Devices: [Specify as appropriate, e.g., "In this competition," or "For all play at this course," etc.], a player may obtain distance information by using a device that measures distance only. However, if, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance-measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect his play (e.g., gradient, wind-speed, temperature, etc.), the player is in breach of Rule 14-3, for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional functions are actually used.  Asking a playing partner for distance between two objects is public information and therefore not seeking advice ( Rule 8-1).
  • Relief from flower beds
    • Players are allowed to take relief from course constructed flower beds if the flower interferes with a players swing.

Tournament Eligibility

  • The BMGA Board has approved a measure to make sure that all members are responsible for the payment of tournaments that they are registered for.  It is expected that a member who registered for a tournament will pay all outstanding balances prior to the participating in the next event.  Exceptions to this rule can be mandated by the BMGA Board as necessary.

NOTE: WE ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON GATHERING ALL LOCAL RULES THAT EXIST AND AT THIS TIME THIS MAY NOT BE A COMPLETE LIST
